Emmy Snubs: 'Atlanta,' 'The Handmaid's Tale' Shut Out in Major Categories

The critically acclaimed series both won awards at last weekend's Creative Arts ceremonies, but didn't take home any trophies on Monday night.

While Game of Thrones, Saturday Night Live, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Ryan Murphy's Versace-centered second season of American Crime Story cleaned up Monday night at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards, a number of other multiple nominees went home empty-handed.

Hulu's critically acclaimed series The Looming Tower and The Handmaid's Tale, last year's best drama series winner in the absence of Thrones, failed to collect any awards. Handmaid's Tale did win three honors at last weekend's Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies but failed to take home any prizes Monday night, including in the categories of best drama series and lead actress in a drama, both of which it won last year. Looming Tower, which was up for four Emmys, including for star Jeff Daniels, was completely shut out. Daniels did win an Emmy, but it was for his supporting role on Netflix's Godless.

And while FX's second installment of Murphy's American Crime Story anthology series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, won seven awards, fellow celebrated FX series Atlanta, which had the most nominations for a comedy series this year with 16, only won three awards, all at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Similarly, NBC's breakout hit This Is Us only won one Emmy out of multiple nominations, and that prize went to guest actor Ron Cephas Jones, a trophy handed out during the Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies. Other shows winning multiple awards at last week's ceremonies but failing to collect in the main telecast include Netflix's GLOW and NBC's Will & Grace.

And while Westworld was tied with SNL for the second most nominations of any series this year, with 21, the HBO series only received four awards, one fewer than last year's total, all but one of which were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies.

Programs with multiple Emmy nominations that failed to win any of the awards for which they were nominated include Black-ish, The Voice, Twin Peaks, American Horror Story: Cult, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Silicon Valley, Ozark, Fahrenheit 451 and Roseanne, which scored two noms despite ABC ending its awards campaign for the top-rated sitcom when the show was canceled.

Bystanders pulled a 26-year-old man onto Newcomb Hollow Beach and performed CPR, Wellfleet Police Lt. Michael Hurley said in a statement. The man, who had been boogie-boarding with a friend, according to the Associated Press, was sent to Cape Cod Hospital, where he later died, Hurley said. The Boston Globe identified the victim as Arthur Medici, from Revere, Mass., a city just Northeast of Boston about a two-hour drive from Wellfleet. The National Park Service, which is responsible for that part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, tweeted that the attack took place about 300 yards south of the beach, and about 30 feet from shore, according to the Boston Herald.
